It would be my pleasure to share with you a short piece on the life of Ulrich Föck - brother, friend and South African BMXER. Ulrich lived on the ultimate edge every single day of his life. He was incredibly straight forward; you either loved him or you despised him. He was a very loyal friend and became a brother to a lot of people including myself. One would find him every Saturday at the skate park with the rest of us. I can recall tons of memories with Ulrich and I would love to share a few of them with you.
In 2007 Ulrich managed to get me locked up in a holding cell in the Brooklyn Police Station for allegedly stealing a BMX tube. I went to the till to pay for the tube and Ulrich had disappeared out the door with the tube and I had the tube’s box in my hand. I didn’t see him for months after that, but he slowly worked his way back into my friendship group as he always did when he’d done something wrong.
There are too many parties to mention where Ulrich became the centre of attention because of his incredible spontaneity. He was always a great guy to go out with and the party was just that much better with him there.
Sadly, his life ended on the 4 September 2010 in a tragic car accident that left Kyle Crafford in a coma and Mandy in hospital with three torn discs in her spine. Ulrich was only 21 but he changed more lives than anyone else I know. Ulrich was truly an amazing person through and through and will be missed. Anytime you get on your BMX and you doubt yourself, it’s Ulrich sitting on your shoulder telling you to “Shut up and do it!”
Thank you for the great times buddy and all the awesome sessions we had together, you will never be forgotten.
‘Till we meet again.
