Article and photos by Jared Aufrichtig At the end of January SIX 2010 kicked off with a bang. The greatly anticipated event was “bigger and badder” then ever featuring more than fifty local and international tattoo artists, two massive after-parties hosted by top-class SA musicians and a couple of impressive art exhibitions that combined both fine art and tattoo culture. The convention was held at the CTICC (Cape Town International Convention Centre) over three days and offered an arena where the public could be exposed to some of the finest tattoo artists in the world and bask in the positive aspects of the tattoo lifestyle without having to journey overseas. This year’s tattoo artist roster had nearly doubled, featuring some of the leading names in international tattooing as well as a few of the local legends. Returning international artists like Bob Tyrrell, who is considered to be the foremost portrait tattoo artist in the world, were completely booked throughout the convention. Bob is known to take six to eight hours plus on a piece and will almost always finish in one session. Laura Juan, another prominent and admired returning artist, was back with her exceptional tattoo style and splendid pin-ups. An additional artist whose return to the African shores was highly anticipated is Paul “King of Rock Tattoos” Booth. Known world-wide for his dark\evil style of epidermal art, he is one of the most popular tattoo artists on the planet. His skin art is exceptional and noticeably different. He relies solely on his gifted mind to create magnificent macabre images using no sketches or references. Paul’s extensive clientele list boasts some of the biggest stars as well as bands like Slayer, Pantera, and Slipknot to name a few. One artist that made a strong impression at the SIX convention was newcomer Dave Noellert from New Orleans. His finely crafted hand-made tattoo machines were a real treat plus he has a refined classic old-school custom tattoo style that will “knock your head off”. Walking around the convention hall I immediately noticed that the local artists had stepped up their game over that past year in anticipation for this monumental tattoo gathering, from the style and grace of Tyler B. Murphy’s S.O.S Parlor stall to the refined techniques and distinctive approach of third generation tattoo artist Shaun Lindgren from Bayview Tattoos (now East Coast Kustoms), who is currently based and working out of London. Tattoo artists representing regions all over South Africa had various styles that were on par with most of the international artists. SIX also played host to several rocking after-parties and a kiff braai or two. Both Friday and Saturday’s gigs featured some of South Africa’s latest up-and-coming, alongside some of our most well known musical acts with bands like The Ragdolls and The Rudimentals as well as the “cooler as eke” MC Jack Parow appearing on the bill. Not only did the parties have great music but the convention was blessed with first-class hip hop beats as well. The mad but gifted ranting of Cape Town’s own Lonesome Dave Ferguson was enjoyed a few times over the course of the weekend and DJ Just Be…? dropped a short guest set that got the entire convention moving; even Paul Booth cruised over from his stall to say he was feeling it.
All in all it was a fantastic week of tattoo mayhem enjoyed by everyone, from the public to the tattoo artists themselves. It is already considered a “must do” convention for the world’s top tattoo artists. South Africa is rapidly becoming a unique, exciting and economically feasible destination for those seeking to collect unique, professional tattoo art. This annual convention is a wonderful way to showcase the diversity and depth of the tattoo culture. Big up goes out to SixLove Events in addition to Manuela Gray and Simon White from Wildfire Tattoos - without them the entire festival would not have been possible. Southern Ink Xposure 2010 was an enormous success and everyone had a blast. If you don’t believe me, ask a certain group of infamous angelic bikers, they will tell you it was good times. I cannot wait to see what is in store for next year.
