To celebrate Go Skateboarding Day, My Culture held a comp on Saturday 26 June 2010, dedicated to skateboarding. The comp was held at the Urban X Skate Park in Sunninghill Joburg. The park has an inside section with a rad bowl, mellow square rail, grind boxes and quarter pipes. The park also has an outside section with much bigger ramps and obstacles as well as an awesome foam pit with a huge roll in.
The morning was filled with eager kids registering and warming up for the Am division. The people that really stood out were Sam Vider, who had “consistency” written all over his skating, Ofentse and China both had really clean styles and Shaun Burger did some nice lines on the rail. The rest of the kids were of a pretty high standard in general. Everyone was doing lots of blunts and drops.
After the Am comp, the KFD team did a little demo. A lot of their riders where injured from the tour they had just done, but they still rocked a sick mini ramp session. Sam Khumalo joined them, and we were all reminded just how stylish that guy skates.
In the Pro division we saw ‘Tiny’, A.K.A Anton Wilsenach, who won the Am division at the My Culture Resurrection Jam earlier this year, and man-oh-man did he give the pros a run for their money, placing second overall. He busted board slides, backside 180’s and he feebled the rail. Shane Gove was also good; skating with his typical park style he tried a flip front board on the rail but didn’t quite land it. JJ Wolmarans also stood out; he did the sickest krooked grind down the rail.
For Best Trick, we saw general tricks go down such as 360 flips, backside flips, etc. We also saw a lot of sick tricks, like a nose grind down the rail, backside back foot flip, etc. Martin Meyer was going higher than everyone else but wasn’t managing to stick his tricks. He did, however, drop into the wall (which was insanely high and 100% vert) after the comp, which couldn’t count for Best Trick. In the end, it was JP Putter who took the win with a back lip down the hand rail.
Thanks, once again, to all the sponsors that got involved in this event, it would not be possible without you; Toy Machine, Etnies, Foundation Skateboards, Pig Wheels, Slip Skate Co, Iron Fist, Mob Clothing, Black Flys, Revolution, Red Bull, New Day Skate Park and XASA. Thanks to all the judges, the commentator, all the photographers, Mel and Brent and the My Culture event crew.
