“Growing up, I had nothing else but graffiti,” says Mak1one. Today, his art is prolific and varied. Whether it’s painting primary schools in Mozambique or doing a piece up in Site E, Mak1one strives to create cultural meaning on concrete walls. “I’m aware of what I am leaving behind. Where you paint has influence,” he explains, “so I try to uplift or send positive messages through my work.” Athena Lamberis talks to him about his current projects, graffiti by-laws and what painting means in his life and to those who experience it.
